"To our dismay, we discovered that some of the water cooled
Klystrons had been tested by the manufacturer but not drained before being
sent to the arctic." - Charles Carney |

Who built it?The Federal Electric Corporation (a unit of IT&T) had the contract for physical construction of the DEWline. The Western Electric Corporation had the contract for the installation of the electronic equipment. The Bell Telephone Laboratories had the contract for design specifications of the electronic equipment and for conducting the acceptance or commissioning tests. I was on contract to Bell Telephone Laboratories through Collins Radio. Raytheon designed and manufactured the long-range radar systems. Collins Radio designed and manufactured the short-range and long-range scatter communication systems. Below is a picture from the "Thank-you" dinner put on by Bell
Labs and Western Electric for the engineers, technicians, and supervisors
of the DEWline. This was after the DEWline had been officially accepted.
It is actually a very small portion of the technical people who worked
on the DEWline and markedly contrasts with the images of these people
in their arctic work clothes. Yours truly is in the upper right hand corner,
just in front of the clock (at nine o'clock as it were). |
